Activity report 2019

Abes is pleased to announce the publication of its activity report and social balance sheet for 2019.
All institutional documents are available on the "Publications" page of our website.

Bibliographic Transition

The annual study day of the "Systems and Data" group will take place, remotely, on 4 December 2020 on the theme"Cataloguing by entities or the big bang of data!". The day will be recorded.
Institutions that have participated in workshops on the Bibliostratus tool, or that have used it, are invited to give their opinion in an online survey open until 20 December.
A third ticket is available on the next evolutions of the Unimarc format validated by the Permanent Unimarc Committee. These evolutions will concern, among other things, language codes of non-Latin alphabets.

National licenses

Three new resources purchased under national licence, following a tender procedure as part of the CollEx-Persée acquisitions programme, are now accessible:
- 19th Century British Parliamentary Archives: digitised parliamentary documents, a rich primary source for the study of the British Empire in the 19th century and its relations with the world;
- Early European Books: digitised collections of documents from the holdings of the National Library of Florence (15th-17th centuries);
- Twentieth Century Religious Thought - Christianity: works by leading 20th century theologians, plus the archive of Reinhold Niebuhr

Maintenance operations

Users of our applications have noted thatAbes has been carrying out short maintenance operations since the beginning of November, making the applications unavailable for less than 24 hours. These operations are necessary to migrate the databases of the full-web applications to an improved version of Oracle.

Network IdRef

5 NEW FEATURES! IdRef is evolving to better meet the needs of users of the Calames, Sudoc and Theses networks. It is now possible to: derive, in one click, authority records from the BnF catalogue; merge two authority records; switch fromIdRef to Paprika (the data curation interface); copy the PPN into a notepad. Finally, a fifth development will delight end users: the possibility of pushing bibliographic references associated with an author to Zotero. Discover these 5 new features in the "J.e-course" presented to the networks. The documentation has been updated.
ORCID FRANCE COMMUNITY: the General Assembly of the 36 members of the ORCID France consortium, organised by Couperin andAbes, took place in mid-November. It was open to institutions wishing to subscribe to ORCID services for the year 2020-2021, in particular to use the APIs. The AGM was an opportunity to take stock of this first year and to draw up future prospects.

RERO+ BECOMES A DATA PRODUCER IN IDREF: more than 100 cataloguers working in the 41 institutions of the Swiss RERO+ network are now using IdRef, not only to link bibliographic references in their union catalogue to authorities, but also to produce new authorities in IdRef or to enrich existing records. French-speaking Swiss university libraries that are leaving RERO to join the SLSP (Swiss Library Service Platform) academic network will use IdRef in the same way from January 2021.

ENRICHMENT OF AUTHORITY RECORDS IN RELATION TO ANCIENT NATURE: as part of the CollEx-Persée project, "RefDivinities", an important work of enrichment and alignment of records identifying ancient heroes and deities has been carried out by the actors and partners of the project, including the Sorbonne Interuniversity Library. The details of the operations, as well as the benefits for the network's cataloguers, are described in a blog post at Punktokomo.

    QUALITY WORKSHOPS:Abes is once again proposing 8 suggestions for quality workshops, including 2 new ones, to be carried out under the coordination of the Correspondents. The establishments that take up these suggestions are invited to submit a short report.
    BMS Thanks to the information provided by the coordinators Sudoc during a recent survey,Abes has made the list of BMSs in force in the network available to all. It will help schools applying for deployment to check the admissibility of their application and suppliers to better situate themselves in the network. Note: the latest institutions to have deployed an mBMS solution are listed: Poitiers, Grenoble-Alpes, La Rochelle, Université de Paris, Savoie and Paris Saclay.

    CATALOGUE CORRESPONDENTS : in order to better understand the way in which they feel about their role and to find out their training needs,Abes is offering Cataloguing Correspondents the opportunity to express themselves in an online survey. The results will of course be communicated to the network. In the meantime, a small infographic provides a quantitative portrait of the Cataloguing Correspondents group.
    MULTI-SCRIPTURE CATALOGUE : a "Guide to good practice in cataloguing documents in non-Latin scripts" is now available, based on the Methodological Guide. It was designed by the member institutions of the Transliteration WG: Bibliothèque de l'Institut du Monde Arabe, BULAC, Maison Méditerranée des Sciences de l'Homme, Direction Documentation Université de Bordeaux, SCD of the universities Sorbonne Nouvelle, Aix Marseille and Bordeaux Montaigne.
    BIBLIOGRAPHIC TRANSITION STUDY DAY: Mediat Rhône-Alpes is organising a free online study day: "Bibliographic transition for everyone: why and how?

    SHARED REPORTING IN MIR@BEL : through a presentation of the Mir@bel network, the Centre managers of the Sudoc-PS network were able to see, during a J.e-course, the interest of setting up a virtuous circle of improvement of the reporting of continuous resources, between the two networks.
    CHANGE OF HOSTING ESTABLISHMENT FOR CR 26 and CR 69 : the Sorbonne inter-university library, which hosted CR 26, and the Grenoble-Alpes University libraries, which hosted CR 69, did not wish to renew their agreement withAbes as of 1 January 2021. As a result, the agency will temporarily manage the day-to-day activities of these centres, while considering the transfer of their activities to ad hoc structures. The evolution of the Sudoc-PS network in relation to other national actions concerning periodicals is also being studied. TheAbes thanks Véronique Comby and Marianne Petit, respectively in charge of the CR 26 and the CR 69, for their full commitment to the activities of their CR and, more broadly, to the animation of the network of Sudoc-PS centres.

    TOOLS FOR ANALYZING PERIODICAL COLLECTIONS: an online conference with Pierre-Carl Langlais, on the analysis tools developed for the Numapresse project, is proposed on 8 December at 11am, by the CR Occitanie Midi-Pyrénées, in collaboration with Occitanie Livre & Lecture.
    Icon Network Theses

    Theses network

    DIGITALISATION OF THESIS: two surveys were submitted to the institutions of the Theses network. The information gathered on this occasion provides valuable insight into the opportunity to carry out a national project to digitise French doctoral theses.
    MICROFILE REPORTING: more than 150,000 microfiche theses have been reported to Sudoc byAbes. Today, 222 000 microfiche theses out of 245 000 (90.6%) are referenced. Libraries wishing to be exemplarized under certain records only (according to the institution of defense or the discipline) can request the help of theAbes, via its assistance desk, to locate the records which interest them. In addition,Abes will ask for the network's help to correct, complete or locate the records of the 23,000 theses whose microfiches have not yet been reported.
    CATALOGUE GUIDELINES: the cataloguing guidelines for reporting lost or unavailable theses have been updated, and presented in a J.e-course.
